How to Read a CBD Product Label

CBD labels pack a lot onto a small bottle. Here's what each part is actually telling you, and which parts are worth double-checking before you buy.

Total CBD vs. per-serving CBD

The biggest number on the label — "500mg," "1000mg" — is almost always the total CBD content in the whole bottle, not per dose. The per-serving amount (per dropper, per chew, per pump) is usually printed smaller, separately. Mixing these two up is the single easiest label-reading mistake to make.

Cost per mg, not just sticker price

A higher sticker price doesn't automatically mean a worse deal, and a lower one doesn't mean a better one — what matters is price divided by total mg of CBD. Every product listing on this site shows that calculation directly, since comparing sticker prices alone across different bottle sizes and potencies isn't an apples-to-apples comparison.

Spectrum type

Isolate, broad-spectrum, or full-spectrum — see our guide to the difference if the label doesn't spell it out clearly. If a label just says "hemp extract" or "CBD oil" with no spectrum type named, that's worth asking the brand about directly.

Ingredient list

Beyond the hemp extract itself: what's the carrier oil (MCT, hemp seed, olive, salmon oil, and others are all common)? Any added flavoring? Any other active ingredients (glucosamine, melatonin, and similar additions show up often in dog-specific formulas)? A short, legible ingredient list is generally easier to evaluate than a long one with unfamiliar names.

Batch or lot number

This is what ties a specific bottle to its specific Certificate of Analysis. If the brand publishes COAs by batch, this number (or an attached QR code) is how you look yours up.

Recommended weight guidance

Many labels include a dosing chart by dog weight. These vary by brand and formulation — we show whatever a brand publishes on our product pages, but we don't calculate or recommend dosing ourselves. Always follow the actual label and check with your vet, especially for a new supplement.
